Year registered1999
Section classIII-5b

Overview

Registered in 1999 as a sport of *Hosta* 'August Moon', 'Kiwi Sunlover' forms a medium-sized, fast-growing mound distinguished by medium green leaves with wide, golden yellow margins. The leaf blades are cordate at the base, measure 6 inches (15.2 cm) long by 5.3 inches (13.5 cm) wide, and bear eight vein pairs; the margins are slightly rippled and 1.4 inches (3.6 cm) wide, while both leaf surfaces are dull.

In the Garden

Mature plants reach approximately 30 inches (74.9 cm) in diameter and 18 inches (45.1 cm) in height, with a dense, mound-like habit. Scapes rise 23 to 29 inches (58.4 to 73.7 cm) above the foliage and are medium green. 'Kiwi Sunlover' performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the gold margin color is most stable; excessive sun may scorch the leaves. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials and is suitable for borders, woodland gardens, or container culture.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage; protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
