Overview

Registered in 2002 by Peter Ruh from unknown parentage, 'Kinki' is a large hosta distinguished by its heavily rippled, gold-margined leaves and soft yellow clump form. The ovate, cordate-based leaves feature green centers with yellow-gold margins, slightly shiny upper surfaces, dull undersides, and prominent rippling, folding, and light corrugation.

In the Garden

'Kinki' forms a substantial mound 22 inches (55.9 cm) tall and 42 inches (106.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the gold margins remain brightest, and is suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in typical hosta-growing zones. The lavender-pink flowers with purple-red stamens appear on green to lavender scapes 21 to 26 inches (53.3 to 66.0 cm) tall, adding late-season interest.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs may damage the foliage, though the heavily rippled margins offer some resistance; deer will browse this cultivar if given access.
