Overview
Registered in 2002 by P. Ruh as a sport of an unnamed parent, *Hosta* 'Kinbuchi Tachi' is a small, upright cultivar distinguished by its dark green leaves with creamy white margins and erect foliage habit. The leaf blades are elliptic with tapered bases, lightly corrugated, moderately cupped, twisted, and folded, bearing eight prominent vein pairs and a flat marginal variegation that ranges from 0.25 to 0.9 inches (0.6–2.3 cm) wide.
In the Garden
'Kinbuchi Tachi' reaches a mature diameter of 19 inches (48.3 cm) and a height of 19.5 inches (49.5 cm), with scapes extending to 26 inches (66 cm). Its compact size and upright growth suit the front of a shaded border, rock garden, or container. The thin leaf substance and prominent variegation benefit from protection from strong afternoon sun, which may scorch the white margins. Companion plants with contrasting foliage textures, such as ferns or *Heuchera*, complement its form.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. The thin leaves are susceptible to slug damage, and the cultivar is palatable to deer; monitoring and protective measures may be necessary in typical hosta-growing zones.
