Overview

Registered in 2012, *Hosta* 'Kaipoi' is a medium-sized sport of unknown parentage (open-pollinated) notable for its intensely chalky blue-green foliage. The leaves are nearly round with cordate bases, deeply cupped and wavy, with heavily rippled margins and a glaucous bloom on both surfaces.

In the Garden

'Kaipoi' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 29 inches (73.7 cm) in height and 50 inches (127.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue coloration is most pronounced, and is suitable for typical hosta-growing zones. The thick, strongly corrugated leaves and sturdy petioles make it a robust choice for shade borders or as a specimen plant, where its distinctive cupped form and chalky bloom provide textural contrast.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slugs and deer may cause damage, the thick leaf texture offers some resistance compared to thinner-leaved cultivars.
