Overview
Registered in 1987 by F. Maekawa and the American Hosta Society, *Hosta* 'Kabitan' is a small-sized sport distinguished by chartreuse leaves edged with narrow, dark green margins. The leaf blade measures 5 inches (12.7 cm) in length and 2.75 inches (7.0 cm) in width, with five vein pairs and margins 0.1 to 0.25 inches (0.3 to 0.6 cm) wide.
In the Garden
'Habitan' forms a loose clump reaching 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and 15 inches (38.1 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging along pathways. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the chartreuse leaf centers retain their brightness without scorching. The small stature and compact habit also suit container plantings, where it can be paired with other shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns or heucheras.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may feed on the foliage, so monitoring and appropriate deterrents are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent.
