Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek for the American Hosta Society, *Hosta* 'Joshua's Banner' is a large hybrid between *H.* 'Christmas Tree' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Sun Power' (pollen parent). The cultivar is visually distinctive for its ovate, blue-green leaves with heavily rippled white margins and a thin glaucous bloom on the undersides.
In the Garden
'Joshua's Banner' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 47 inches (119.4 cm) in diameter, with individual leaves measuring 12 inches (30.5 cm) long and 7.5 inches (19.1 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-green hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials. Its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage.
