Overview
Registered in 2001 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Great Expectations', 'J. D.'s Luck' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its broad, mottled blue-green margins surrounding a creamy white leaf center. Compared to its parent, it exhibits a wider and more intensely colored margin, heavier leaf substance, and faster growth with minimal leaf burn.
In the Garden
'J. D.'s Luck' forms a substantial mound 28 inches (71.1 cm) tall and 50 inches (127.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue-green margins retain their color and the creamy white center remains bright. The large, broadly ovate leaves—11 inches (27.9 cm) long and 9 inches (22.9 cm) wide—are lightly cupped and wavy, with a dull upper surface and a glaucous bloom beneath. This cultivar pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its bold foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor regularly and take protective measures if needed.
