Overview

Registered in 2000, this giant blue-green hosta was developed from a cross between *H. 'Chartreuse Wedge'* and *H. 'B'*. 'Isle Royal' is distinguished by its very large, heavily textured leaves with a glossy upper surface and a glaucous bloom beneath, combined with a substantial mound form.

In the Garden

'Isle Royal' forms a broad mound reaching 72 inches (183 cm) in diameter and 31 inches (79 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. Its 15-inch (38 cm) long by 13-inch (33 cm) wide leaves feature cordate bases and 15 vein pairs, with dark green, flat margins. The plant produces scapes 44 to 48 inches (112 to 122 cm) tall. This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade perennials. Its substantial size makes it unsuitable for containers and best used as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Isle Royal' may require protection from slugs and deer in garden settings.
