Overview
Registered in 1998 by P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Hydon Gleam' is a miniature cultivar derived from a cross between *H. sieboldii* 'Paxton's Original' and *H.* 'Ogon Koba'. It is visually distinctive for its small, dull green leaves with narrow, slightly rippled gold margins and a very shiny underside.
In the Garden
'Hydon Gleam' forms a low, mound-like clump reaching 7.5 inches (19.1 cm) in height and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It is suited to partial shade and typical hosta-growing zones, where its compact size makes it an excellent choice for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a border. Companion plants include small ferns, heucheras, or miniature sedges that do not overwhelm its scale.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through appropriate barriers or deterrents.
