Overview

Registered in 2001, *Hosta* 'Hudson River' is a small-sized cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Beatrice' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Galaxy' (pollen parent). Its distinctive appearance features medium green leaves with creamy white margins, a slightly rippled edge, and a moderate growth habit that forms an upright, compact clump.

In the Garden

'Hudson River' reaches a mature height of 11 inches (27.9 cm) and a spread of 17 inches (43.2 cm), making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It thrives in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or small woodland perennials. Its compact size also makes it an excellent choice for trough gardens or as an edging plant along shaded pathways.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly and take protective measures if needed.
