Overview
Registered in 2003 by an unknown hybridizer, 'Hot Wheels' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by its heavily corrugated, nearly round blue-green leaves with wide, rippled golden yellow margins. The leaf blades exhibit a glaucous bloom on the underside and a slightly shiny upper surface, with 11 prominent vein pairs visible beneath.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature height of 15 inches (38.1 cm) with a spread of 22 inches (55.9 cm), forming an upright, moderately fast-growing clump. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the gold margins contrast well with darker foliage plants such as ferns or heucheras. The green scapes rise 17 to 21 inches (43.2 to 53.3 cm) above the foliage.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor regularly and take protective measures if necessary.
