Overview

Registered in 2003 by breeder John Kulpa of Honey Hill Gardens, 'Honey Hill Pledge Allegiance' is a giant hosta cultivar derived from a cross of two unnamed seedlings. It is visually distinctive for its intensely blue-green, broadly ovate leaves with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, slightly wavy margins, and a lightly twisted form that contributes to an upright, fast-growing habit.

In the Garden

This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, typical of blue-leaved hostas, where its glaucous bloom remains most pronounced. At maturity, it forms a substantial clump reaching 55 inches (139.7 cm) in diameter and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in height, with individual leaves up to 13 inches (33.0 cm) long and 10 inches (25.4 cm) wide. Its large size and upright shape make it suitable as a specimen or accent in woodland gardens, paired with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials; it is not recommended for container cultivation due to its giant stature.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slug and deer resistance is not absolute, the heavy glaucous coating may deter some pests; typical hosta-growing zones apply.
