Overview

Registered in 1997 by P. Ruh, 'Hirao Grande' is a medium-sized variegated hosta derived from a hybrid of *Hosta rectifolia*. Its upright, fast-growing habit and leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins distinguish it from other rectifolia hybrids.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches approximately 33 inches (83.8 cm) in diameter and 14.5 inches (36.8 cm) in height, with an upright growth form. It performs best in partial shade to filtered sun, typical of most hostas, and its medium size suits it for mid-border positions or as a specimen in woodland gardens. Its upright habit and variegated foliage pair well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer exposures. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protection from deer and slugs may be necessary in garden settings.
