Overview
Registered in 2001, this large hosta cultivar originated from a cross between a streaked sport of *Hosta* 'Christmas Tree' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Halcyon' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its intensely blue-green leaf centers framed by wide, creamy white, slightly rippled margins, with a dull surface on both sides.
In the Garden
*Hosta* 'Hippodrome' forms a mound-like clump reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 29 inches (73.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large, broadly ovate leaves with cordate bases and 12 to 13 vein pairs provide substantial textural contrast in the border.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. This cultivar is moderately susceptible to slug damage, and standard deer deterrents may be necessary in areas with high deer pressure.
