H. ‘High and Mighty’

Overview

Registered in 2003 by an unknown hybridizer, 'High and Mighty' is a giant hosta distinguished by its heavily corrugated, thick leaves that display an unstable variegation of blue-green centers with gold margins, often streaked with blue-green and greenish yellow. The leaves are broadly ovate with cordate bases, lightly cupped, and feature a glaucous bloom on the undersides with a notable white backing.

In the Garden

Reaching 27 inches (68.6 cm) in height and 41 inches (104.1 cm) in diameter with an upright growth habit, this slow-growing giant is best suited to partial shade in typical hosta-growing zones. Its substantial foliage pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast its bold texture. Due to its large mature size, it requires ample spacing and is not suitable for containers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. The thick leaves offer some resistance to slugs, though standard slug control measures are still advisable in damp conditions.
