Overview
Registered in 1988 by R. Savory, 'Hertha' is a small hosta derived from a hybrid of *H.* 'Neat Splash'. It is visually defined by its dark green leaves with white margins, borne on a compact mound that reaches 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter.
In the Garden
'Hertha' performs best in partial to full shade, where its white-margined foliage remains crisp and well-defined. At maturity, the plant forms a tidy, rounded clump suitable for the front of a border, rock garden, or container. Its small stature and subtle variegation pair well with fine-textured companions such as ferns or *Tiarella*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Hertha' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly and take protective measures if needed.
