Overview

Registered in 2005 by B. Kuk, this giant hosta results from a cross between *H. 'Gold Regal'* (pod parent) and *H. 'Sum and Substance'* (pollen parent). 'Herman's Pride' is visually distinguished by its large, blue-green leaves with golden yellow margins, deeply impressed veins, and heavily corrugated, nearly round leaf blades with a cordate base.

In the Garden

'Herman's Pride' reaches a mature spread of 60 inches (152.4 cm) and a height of 36 inches (91.4 cm), with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the blue-green leaf centers and gold margins develop their strongest contrast; excessive sun may scorch the thin, golden margins. Its substantial size and bold foliage make it suitable as a specimen plant or as a backdrop for smaller shade perennials such as ferns, *Heuchera*, or *Tiarella*.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, 'Herman's Pride' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; regular monitoring and protective measures are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent.
