Overview

Registered in 2003 by P. & J. Ruh, 'Herkules' is a large, fast-growing hosta of unknown parentage. Its most distinctive features are the very shiny, dark green leaf margins with a slightly rippled texture, contrasted by a dull underside, and its tall blue-green scapes reaching up to 56 inches (142.2 cm) in height.

In the Garden

'Herkules' forms a substantial, upright clump 30 inches (76.2 cm) tall and 41 inches (104.1 cm) wide, making it suitable as a specimen or background plant in shaded borders. It performs best in typical hosta-growing zones with partial to full shade. The large, ovate leaves with cordate bases and prominent veining pair well with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials. Its fast growth rate and heavy substance make it effective for filling larger garden spaces.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaves offer good slug resistance, though standard deer deterrents may be necessary in areas with heavy deer pressure.
