Overview
Registered in 1982 by D. Reath, this giant blue-green hosta was produced from a cross between *Hosta* 'Frances Williams' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Elegans' (pollen parent). It is distinguished by its very large, cordate leaves with blue-green margins and prominent veining, forming a substantial mound up to 65 inches (165 cm) in diameter and 28 inches (71 cm) in height.
In the Garden
'Helen Doriot' is best suited to partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage retains its best color and avoids scorching. At giant size, it functions as a bold specimen or backdrop plant in larger borders, with individual leaves reaching 17 inches (43 cm) long and 14 inches (36 cm) wide. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its scale and cool leaf tones.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitoring and protective measures may be necessary in vulnerable gardens.
