Overview
Registered in 2002 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Faithful Heart', 'Heart Broken' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its nearly round, blue-green leaves with heavily rippled margins and a viridescent quality—the foliage emerges with a blue-green cast that gradually shifts to medium green as the season progresses. The leaves measure 4 inches (10.2 cm) long by 3.25 inches (8.3 cm) wide, are lightly cupped and moderately wavy, and bear a dull upper surface with a glaucous bloom beneath.
In the Garden
'Heart Broken' reaches a mature spread of 20 inches (50.8 cm) and a height of 8 inches (20.3 cm), forming a dense, fast-growing mound suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging in partial to full shade. Its compact size and rounded leaf shape make it an excellent candidate for container cultivation, where the rippled margins and color transition are readily observed. Companion plants should be similarly scaled, such as small ferns or *Heuchera* cultivars with contrasting foliage colors.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Heart Broken' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, and protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
