Overview
Registered in 1986 by the American Hosta Society, *Hosta* 'Haku Chu Han' is a miniature sport distinguished by its unusual reverse variegation: leaves bear a broad white center with narrow green margins, rather than the more common green center with white edges. The leaves are lanceolate, measuring 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) long and 1.25 inches (3.2 cm) wide, with four vein pairs and green margins approximately 0.12 inches (0.3 cm) wide.
In the Garden
'Haku Chu Han' forms a compact mound 6 inches (15.2 cm) tall and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of shaded borders, rock gardens, or trough plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the white leaf centers remain bright without scorching. The small stature and tidy habit also make it an excellent candidate for container cultivation, where it can be paired with other miniature hostas or fine-textured shade perennials such as *Carex* or *Heucherella*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, as the thin white leaf tissue is prone to desiccation in dry conditions. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage, and protection may be required in areas where these pests are prevalent.
