Overview

Registered in 2008 by P. & J. Ruh, the origin of *Hosta* 'Gus' is unknown. This miniature cultivar forms a compact, mound-like plant 11 inches (27.9 cm) in both height and diameter, distinguished by its all-green, variegated foliage with lance-shaped leaves that are lightly cupped, twisted, and folded, featuring light green, slightly rippled margins and a dull upper surface with a slightly shiny underside.

In the Garden

*Hosta* 'Gus' is suitable for typical hosta-growing zones in partial to full shade, where its moderate growth rate and small dimensions—leaves reaching 3.63 inches (9.2 cm) long and 1.13 inches (2.9 cm) wide—make it an excellent choice for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. Its long petioles and compact habit pair well with other miniature hostas, small ferns, or shade-tolerant groundcovers like *Tiarella* or *Heucherella*. The plant is well-suited to container cultivation due to its miniature size.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Gus' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents should be considered in areas where these pests are prevalent.
