Overview
Registered in 2009 from unknown parentage, 'Groovy Yellow' is a small hosta distinguished by its nearly round, dull green leaves with greenish-yellow flat margins and pronounced seersuckering. The leaf surface is dull on top and slightly shiny beneath, with deeply incised veins and a burnished yellow cast that gives the cultivar its name.
In the Garden
This mound-forming hosta reaches 13 inches (33.0 cm) in height and 27 inches (68.6 cm) in diameter, with a slow growth rate that makes it suitable for small spaces, rock gardens, or container cultivation. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The green scape rises 23 inches (58.4 cm) above the foliage, bearing flowers typical of the genus.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. Like most hostas, 'Groovy Yellow' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; standard deterrents may be necessary in high-pressure areas.
