Overview
Registered in 2003 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Allan P. McConnell', 'Grim Grinning Ghost' is a miniature cultivar distinguished by its seasonal color transformation: newly emerged leaves are entirely white, then develop a green center with white margins as they mature. The mature foliage presents green leaves with white margins, often showing white and green streaks, and the leaf surface is dull on both sides.
In the Garden
This miniature hosta forms a compact mound 3 inches (7.6 cm) tall and 8 inches (20.3 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and is well suited for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a shaded border. Its small size also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Grim Grinning Ghost' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate protective measures may be necessary.
