Overview
Registered in 2004 by E. Deckert as a sport of *Hosta* 'Blue Mouse Ears', 'Green Mouse Ears' is a miniature cultivar distinguished by its nearly round, cupped leaves of medium green with a dull upper surface and glaucous bloom beneath. The leaf blade measures 2.75 inches (7.0 cm) long by 2 inches (5.1 cm) wide, with eight to nine vein pairs and flat margins.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a compact, mound-like plant reaching 5 inches (12.7 cm) in height and 9 inches (22.9 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and is well suited to rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. Its diminutive size makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation, where its thick, cupped leaves provide textural contrast alongside other small shade perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new shoots emerge. The thick leaves offer some resistance to slugs, though standard hosta pest management is advisable in areas with heavy slug or deer pressure.
