Overview

Registered in 1971 by E. Fisher, this large hosta originated as a hybrid of *H. 'Frances Williams'*. 'Green Formal' is distinguished by its medium green leaves with slight undulating margins, forming a substantial mound 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter and 17 inches (43.2 cm) in height.

In the Garden

'Green Formal' performs best in partial to full shade, where its large, textured leaves create a bold groundcover effect. At maturity, this cultivar forms a dense clump nearly 3.5 feet across, making it suitable for mid-border placement or as a specimen in woodland gardens. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its substantial foliage mass.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, 'Green Formal' is susceptible to slug damage and may require protection in damp conditions; deer also find it palatable.
