Overview
Registered in 2002 by P. & J. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Green Eclipse' is a sport of *Hosta* 'Midwest Gold' distinguished by its large, ovate leaves with a bright gold center and a light green, slightly rippled margin. The leaf blade measures 10.25 inches (26.0 cm) long by 8.25 inches (21.0 cm) wide, with a medium gold center and a green margin 0.5 to 0.75 inches (1.3 to 1.9 cm) wide, exhibiting moderate cupping and twisting.
In the Garden
'Green Eclipse' forms a mound-like clump reaching 34 inches (86.4 cm) in diameter and 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the bright gold center color is most pronounced; excessive sun may scorch the leaves. Its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of shaded borders, paired with ferns or *Heuchera* cultivars. The blue-green scapes, 17 to 19 inches (43.2 to 48.3 cm) tall, bear lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Green Eclipse' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
