Overview

Registered in 1986 by C. Owens, *Hosta* 'Green Aspen' is a selfed seedling of *H.* 'Aspen Gold', producing a medium-sized variegated cultivar. Its leaves are distinguished by dark green margins surrounding a lighter center, with a glossy upper surface and broadly cordate base.

In the Garden

'Green Aspen' reaches a mature diameter of 22 inches (55.9 cm) and height of 12 inches (30.5 cm), making it suitable for mid-border positions in partial to full shade. Its medium size pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials, and it can be grown in containers with adequate drainage. The plant produces a scape 15 inches (38.1 cm) high, bearing typical hosta flowers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
