Overview
Registered in 2003 as a sport of *Hosta* 'September Sun', 'Green Army Man' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its unusually broad, medium green leaf margins surrounding a greenish yellow center. The leaf surface is slightly shiny above, dull beneath, and moderately cupped with moderate corrugation and light folding; the broadly ovate leaves with cordate bases bear nine to ten pairs of veins.
In the Garden
'Green Army Man' forms a substantial mound 18 inches (45.7 cm) tall and 45 inches (114.3 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and its large, boldly variegated foliage provides strong textural contrast when paired with ferns, astilbes, or other shade perennials. The plant produces scapes 36 to 48 inches (91.4 to 121.9 cm) tall bearing greenish red stems, with a notable tendency toward branching and fanning of the inflorescences.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through appropriate deterrents or barriers.
