Overview
Registered in 2004, 'Great White Way' is a medium-sized hosta of unknown pollen parentage, with 'Supreme Expectations' as the pod parent. Its most distinctive feature is the unstable white streaking that appears in broad, varying patterns across blue-green leaves with white margins, creating a variegated effect that differs from plant to plant.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a mound-like clump reaching 18.5 inches (47.0 cm) in diameter and 9.5 inches (24.1 cm) in height, with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the white streaking remains most stable and the blue-green leaf color is preserved. The 8.5-inch (21.6 cm) long, 5.5-inch (14.0 cm) wide leaves are broadly ovate with cordate bases, moderately corrugated and lightly wavy, with a slightly shiny upper surface and glaucous bloom underneath. The scape rises 12 to 17 inches (30.5 to 43.2 cm) high, bearing glaucous green flowers.
Care Notes
Standard hosta care applies: consistent moisture during the growing season, with fertilization in early spring as growth emerges. The white-streaked foliage may be more susceptible to slug damage than solid-colored hostas, and deer browsing should be anticipated in typical hosta-growing zones.
