Overview

Registered in 2001, *Hosta* 'Grandma's Gem' is a miniature cultivar derived from *H. 'Dorset Blue'* (pod parent) with unknown pollen parent. It is distinguished by its small, ovate leaves of green with gold margins, the margins being greenish yellow and slightly rippled; the leaf surface is slightly shiny above and dull beneath, with 4 to 5 vein pairs and a tapered base. The plant forms a compact, mound-like habit.

In the Garden

'Grandma's Gem' reaches a mature size of 4 inches (10.2 cm) in height and 8 inches (20.3 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. Its miniature stature makes it well suited for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of a shaded border. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with other small perennials such as dwarf ferns or *Heuchera*. The plant is also an excellent candidate for container cultivation, where its small dimensions and variegated foliage can be appreciated at close range.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitoring and appropriate barriers are recommended.
