Overview

Registered in 2003 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance', 'Grand Total' is a giant variegated cultivar distinguished by its large, broadly ovate leaves with medium green margins and a cordate base. The leaf blades reach 16 inches (40.6 cm) in length and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in width, forming a substantial mound of green foliage.

In the Garden

'Grand Total' performs best in partial to full shade, where its large leaves develop optimal coloration and size. With a moderate growth rate, mature plants form a mound-like habit reaching giant proportions, suitable as a specimen or focal point in shaded borders and woodland gardens. Its substantial foliage pairs well with ferns, *Astilbe*, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture or height.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as the large leaves are attractive to both pests.
