Overview

Registered in 1988 by E. Smith and the British Hosta and Hemerocallis Society, 'Granary Gold' is a small hosta notable for its bright early-season foliage: green leaves with yellow-gold margins. The ovate leaves, measuring 6.5 inches long and 4 inches wide, have a dull surface above and below, with seven prominent vein pairs and lightly wavy, corrugated, and folded edges.

In the Garden

This compact cultivar reaches 11 inches in height and 18 inches in diameter, with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where its gold margins remain brightest; too much sun may scorch the leaves. Suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or small containers, it pairs well with other small hostas or shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns and heucheras.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry spells. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
