Overview
Registered in 2009, *Hosta* 'Gotham' is a giant cultivar resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Great Plains' (pod parent) and a seedling of *Hosta* 'Sea Prize' (pollen parent). It is distinguished by its intensely blue-green, heavily rippled leaves with a white underside, a glaucous bloom, and an upright, vase-shaped habit.
In the Garden
'Gotham' reaches a mature diameter of 56 inches (142.2 cm) and a height of 32 inches (81.3 cm), with scapes extending 35 to 40 inches (88.9 to 101.6 cm). Its heavy substance and rigid, upward-pointing leaves make it suitable for partially shaded borders or as a specimen plant in typical hosta-growing zones. The blue-green foliage pairs well with yellow or chartreuse hostas and ferns, though its large size requires ample space.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. The thick, heavily waxed leaves offer some resistance to slugs, but standard slug management may still be necessary in damp conditions.
