Overview
Registered in 2005 from unknown parentage, 'Golden Simplicity' is a large hosta cultivar distinguished by its green leaves with bright yellow margins and upright, elegant habit. The leaf blades are ovate with cordate bases, measuring 13 inches (33.0 cm) long by 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide, featuring 13 vein pairs and lightly wavy edges with flat yellow margins.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter at maturity, with a moderate growth rate and upright form. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the yellow margins maintain their brightness without scorching. The substantial leaf substance and shiny upper surface make it suitable for foreground placement in shaded borders or as a specimen among ferns and other shade perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods to maintain leaf quality, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Golden Simplicity' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in high-pressure areas.
