Overview

Registered in 1988 by E. Smith and the British Hosta and Hemerocallis Society, this small hosta cultivar is a cross between *H.* 'Kabitan' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Hadspen Heron' (pollen parent). 'Golden Oriole' is visually distinctive for its green leaf centers with broad, yellow margins, a color pattern typical of the *H.* 'Kabitan' lineage.

In the Garden

'Golden Oriole' is a small hosta, reaching a mature size of approximately 6 to 8 inches (15–20 cm) in height and 12 to 18 inches (30–45 cm) in spread. It performs best in partial to full shade, though the yellow margins are more pronounced with some morning sun. This compact habit makes it well suited for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Suggested companions include ferns, heucheras, and small woodland perennials that share similar light and moisture requirements.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage, so monitor regularly and use barriers or repellents as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
