Overview
Registered in 1983 by K. Vaughn, 'Gold Piece' is a large, upright hosta derived from a complex cross involving *H. ventricosa*, *H. tibae*, *H. plantaginea*, and *H. nigrescens*. It is visually distinctive for its broad, dark green leaf margins that frame a bright gold center, creating a bold variegated pattern.
In the Garden
'Gold Piece' reaches a mature spread of approximately 50 inches (127 cm) and a height of 42 inches (107 cm), with upright foliage that forms a substantial clump. It performs best in partial to light shade, where the gold centers remain vivid without scorching. The large leaves and tall scapes (49 to 54 inches / 124 to 137 cm) make it a strong specimen plant for mid-border or as a focal point in woodland gardens; it pairs well with ferns or other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Slugs may damage the broad leaves, so monitor and manage as needed; deer may also browse the foliage.
