Overview

Registered in 1988 by E. Smith and the BHHS, *Hosta* 'Gold Leaf' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from a hybrid of *H. 'Fortunei Aurea'*. It is visually distinctive for its green leaf centers bordered by golden yellow margins, a color pattern that provides strong contrast throughout the growing season.

In the Garden

'Gold Leaf' reaches a mature size typical of medium hostas, with leaves approximately 0.0 cm (0 in) long and 0.0 cm (0 in) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins remain bright without scorching, and is suitable for borders, woodland gardens, or as a groundcover beneath deciduous trees. Companion plants such as ferns, heucheras, or shade-tolerant perennials complement its foliage pattern. Its medium stature makes it appropriate for mixed perennial beds but not for small containers.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitoring and protective measures are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
