Overview

Registered in 1982 by K. Vaughn, 'Gold Cover' is a small hosta cultivar derived from a cross of two gold seedlings. It is visually distinctive for its green leaves with deep yellow margins, a color pattern that creates a gold-edged appearance across the compact mound.

In the Garden

'Gold Cover' reaches a mature height of 6 inches (15.2 cm) and spreads to 9 inches (22.9 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as an edging plant. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or miniature astilbes. Its small size also makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Gold Cover' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage in garden settings.
