Overview
Registered in 2009 and introduced by Loleta Powell, 'Gallant Heart' is a large, mound-forming hosta distinguished by its deeply cupped, corrugated, broadly ovate leaves with cordate (heart-shaped) bases. The foliage is blue-green with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, and the leaf margins are the same blue-green as the blade, contributing to a rich, uniform coloration.
In the Garden
'Gallant Heart' reaches a mature spread of approximately 66 inches (167.6 cm) and a height of 36 inches (91.4 cm), forming a substantial mound. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, which require protection from strong sun to maintain their glaucous bloom. Its large, textured leaves make it suitable as a specimen or accent in shaded borders, woodland gardens, or mass plantings, where it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. 'Gallant Heart' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents or barriers may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
