Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance' registered in 2004, 'Fran Godfrey' is a giant cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with wide, dark green, slightly rippled margins. The leaf blade is broadly ovate with a cordate base, moderately corrugated, and bears a glaucous bloom on the underside; the margin measures 0.6 to 1.3 cm (0.25 to 0.5 in) wide and is greenish yellow in color.
In the Garden
'Fran Godfrey' reaches a mature diameter of 119.4 cm (47 in) and a height of 59.7 cm (23.5 in), with an upright, fast-growing habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, and is suitable for use as a specimen or in mixed borders with other shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*. Its large size makes it inappropriate for containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season; fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, though the thick, corrugated leaves offer some resistance.
