Overview
Registered in 1982 by Paul Aden, *Hosta* 'Fragrant Gold' is a giant-sized hybrid derived from *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance'. It is distinguished by its large, heavily textured leaves with deep yellow margins surrounding a green center, and its tall scapes bearing fragrant flowers.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature size of approximately 22 inches (56 cm) in diameter and 14 inches (36 cm) in height, with individual leaves up to 12 inches (31 cm) long and 10 inches (25 cm) wide. It performs best in partial shade to dappled sunlight, where the gold margins remain most vivid; excessive sun may scorch the leaves. Its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen plant or for the middle to back of a border, where it pairs well with ferns and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitoring and appropriate controls are recommended in areas where these pests are prevalent.
