Overview

A sport of *Hosta* 'Blue Baron' registered in 2009, 'Flemish Baron' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its variegated foliage: dark green leaf margins with a slightly shiny upper surface and a flat growth habit. The lance-shaped leaves, which taper at the base, reach 6.3 inches (16.0 cm) in length and 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) in width, with seven to eight vein pairs.

In the Garden

This compact hosta forms a dense mound 18.8 inches (47.8 cm) in diameter and 7.3 inches (18.5 cm) tall, with a notably flat profile. It performs best in partial to full shade, suiting typical hosta-growing zones. Its small size makes it appropriate for rock gardens, container plantings, or the front of shaded borders, where it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other low-growing perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Flemish Baron' may be browsed by deer and is susceptible to slug damage; monitor accordingly.
