Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek, this large cultivar resulted from a cross between *Hosta* 'Christmas Tree' and *Hosta* 'Donahue Piecrust'. It is distinguished by its blue-green leaves with white, rippled margins and a notable glaucous bloom on the undersides, features that prompted its original designation as 'Pancakes' before the name was changed to 'Flapjack'.
In the Garden
'Flapjack' forms a substantial clump reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 43 inches (109.2 cm) in diameter, with a semi-upright growth habit. The ovate, cordate-based leaves measure 11 inches (27.9 cm) long by 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide and are moderately corrugated, with dull upper surfaces. This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, it may be susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing.
