Overview
Registered in 2003 as a sport of an unnamed parent, *Hosta* 'First Mate' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its narrow, lance-shaped leaves with grayish-green centers (RHS 3/143C) and dark green, slightly rippled margins (RHS 3/139A). The foliage is notably dense, heavily rippled, and dull on both surfaces, with leaves measuring up to 10 inches (25.4 cm) long and 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) wide, bearing three to four vein pairs.
In the Garden
'First Mate' reaches a mature spread of approximately 21 inches (53.3 cm) in diameter and a height of 10 inches (25.4 cm), forming a compact, moderate-growing mound. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, as is typical for variegated hostas, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or woodland sedges. Its small stature and dense, rippled foliage make it suitable for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'First Mate' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
