Overview

Registered in 1978 by F. Shaw and introduced by P. Aden, 'Fascination' is a large hosta cultivar distinguished by its green leaves with white margins and irregular yellow to dark green streaking within the leaf center. The foliage reaches 15 inches (38.1 cm) in length and 5 inches (12.7 cm) in width, with ten pairs of veins, and the plant forms a clump 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter and 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height.

In the Garden

This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, where its variegated leaf pattern remains most stable. At maturity, it forms a substantial mound suitable for mid-border placement or as a specimen in shaded beds. It pairs well with other shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns, astilbes, and heucheras, and its large leaves provide textural contrast against finer foliage. The scape height is recorded as 18 inches (45.7 cm), though the original registry notes a range to 0 inches, suggesting variability in flower stalk development.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur, so protective measures are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent. This cultivar is hardy in typical hosta-growing zones.
