Overview

Registered in 2005 by P. & J. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Fagan' is a medium-sized cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its blue-green foliage with a glaucous bloom on the upper surface and a very shiny underside. The ovate leaves are lightly twisted, moderately wavy, and corrugated, with light green, slightly rippled margins and 11 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

'Hagan' forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching 17 inches (43.2 cm) in height and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter, with leaves 8 inches (20.3 cm) long and 5.25 inches (13.3 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its substantial texture makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in woodland gardens. The blue-green foliage pairs well with golden or chartreuse companions such as *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance' or *Carex elata* 'Aurea'.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. 'Fagan' is noted as a rugged grower with good texture, but like most hostas, it may be damaged by slugs and deer in moist, shaded conditions.
