Overview

Registered in 1988 by P. Aden as a sport of *Hosta* 'Citation', 'Excitation' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its green leaves with chartreuse to gold margins that exhibit slight undulations. The leaf blades measure 7 inches (17.8 cm) in length and 4 inches (10.2 cm) in width, with eight pairs of veins.

In the Garden

'Excitation' forms a compact mound reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 34 inches (86.4 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders or rock gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and pairs well with small ferns, heucheras, or woodland groundcovers. Its small stature also makes it an appropriate choice for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Excitation' may be susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so protective measures should be considered where these pests are prevalent.
