Section classV-1

Overview

Registered in 1994, this miniature hosta is a hybrid of *Hosta* 'Emerald Carpet'. Its distinguishing features are narrow, medium green leaves with slightly rippled margins, a dull upper surface, and a very shiny underside, combined with dark red scapes that rise well above the foliage.

In the Garden

Reaching approximately 6 inches (15.2 cm) in height and spreading to 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter, 'Emeralds and Rubies' forms a compact, rhizomatous clump suitable for the front of a border, rock garden, or trough. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its subdued leaf sheen and red scapes are most visible. As a miniature, it is well suited to container cultivation. Companion plants might include small ferns, *Heuchera* cultivars, or fine-textured sedges that do not overwhelm its scale.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
