Overview
Registered in 2002 by P. & J. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Elatior' is a large, upright-growing cultivar of unknown parentage, distinguished by its medium green, slightly rippled leaves with a light twist and wave, and notably tall bloom scapes that can reach up to 144.8 cm (57 in). The ovate leaves, measuring 24.1 cm (9.5 in) long and 17.1 cm (6.75 in) wide, feature 11 prominent vein pairs and a slightly shiny surface on both sides.
In the Garden
'Elatior' forms a substantial clump 86.4 cm (34 in) in diameter and 36.8 cm (14.5 in) tall, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its upright habit makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen plant beneath deciduous trees. The tall scapes, which rise well above the foliage, provide vertical interest and pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slug and deer resistance is not specifically documented for this cultivar, standard hosta precautions are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
